"WHEN DO... ?" Poems by India

India is in second grade. She likes to write a lot. India writes just for fun. India invented "When do...?" poems. Read these wonderful poems, it might make you want to write one of your own.

 

When Do Cats go Wild?
When do cats go wild? I know and even some other people know, too.
Cats go wild if you play with them with rope or something else.
Maybe you run after them, sometime when their tail is big.
Maybe you have a dog and it has dog food in the house and the cat eats some.
Or you may stomp your foot.
That's how cats go wild.

When do Teachers go Mad?
When do teachers go mad? I know and even some other kids know, too.
Maybe you are throwing spitballs at her.
Maybe you get in a fight for no reason.
Maybe you're talking in front of her.
Maybe you're putting lip gloss on.
Maybe you're throwing something in the trash and she said not to.
That's how they go mad.

When do Kids get Mad?
When do kids get mad? All the kids in the world know.
Maybe a teacher will ask you the same questions.
Maybe your mom or dad say no to you.
Maybe you get something wrong on your test.
Maybe you got in a fight.
Maybe your teacher made you write.
Maybe you got smart and someone didn't want to be your friend.
That's how kids get mad.

When do Kids Hate School?
When do kids hate school? I know.
Maybe you got in a fight and they say it's all your fault.
Maybe your teacher rolled her eyes at you.
Maybe someone got smart with you for no reason.
Maybe your teacher made you write.
Maybe you made her mad and she put you in the corner.
That's why some kids hate school.

When do People go Bad?
When do people go bad? I always know that one.
Maybe at lunch you act up, but in class you don't.
Maybe someone said no and you get smart.
Maybe some people want you to be on their bad side.
Maybe you got mad and wanted to be bad.
That's how people go bad.

Why do Men Have Problems with Maps?
Why do men have problems with maps? I hear that all the time.
Maybe they want to show their ladies what they can do.
Maybe they always don't want to ask directions from anyone.
Maybe they didn't want to go on the trip. Only the kids wanted to go.
That's why men have problems with maps.

 

Crafts

Socks and Gloves ...

Jasmin invented a technique of making old gloves and old socks come alive ... as wonderful creatures. She taught this technique to the kids at her Philadelphia after-school program (and also at her school). Jasmin's friend Doneisha had her own imaginative ideas about making these stuffed personages and together Jasmin and Doneisha spent all summer and a lot of the school year, too, making the amazing stuffed personalities you see below.

 

...these are just socks and gloves??!!

Jasmin is starting another line of big-personality stuffed-creatures she calls "Cuddle Buddies". Look at the picture of her sister, India, and you'll know how they got that name!

 

Drawing/Painting

Richard likes to do lettering. His letters are bold and dramatic.
